It's raining poppies in Sutton's Idlewells to remember those fallen in the First World War

The 60 white and red umbrellas are decorated with 1,500 handmade poppies made from wool, card and felt to make up what is being called the ‘rememberella’ installation which hangs from the centre's glass roof.

Chloe O’Donnell, aged 27, who is the manager at the shopping centre in Sutton came up with the idea.

The Kirkby resident said: "I don't really know where I got the idea from but it is a really important year and we wanted to recognise it.

"The umbrellas look really striking.

"The support has been fanatic so many people wanted to get involved, I've lost count on how many voluntary hours have gone into it but it is definitely in the hundreds.

"People have helped from all over the community including groups and retailers.

"My daughter has spent hours and hours helping."

Felt poppies were also sent to Sutton Community Academy to assemble and Ashfield Voluntary Action group in Kirkby also helped out.

Tracy Gee, 45, from Mansfield who has owned Material Girl in Idlewells for four-and-a-half-years got behind the display.

She said: "We held two workshops in the centre to knit and crochet poppies.

"My customers brought in just over 600 knitted and crochet poppies.

"It's nice to educate our kids and students have been involved - so it was nice to educate them."

Laurie Peat, 46 who works in Idlewells helped cut out more than 1000 felt poppies with Tracy, she said: "I loved it, every day I had off I was helping. Most days we were cutting out for eight hours."
