Increased tools to crack down on car cruisers

Ashfield District Council has just put in place a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) replacing the previous injunction in the area which had expired.

The injunction was established three years ago by the police, council and other community safety partners, allowing officers to issue notices to offending drivers.

To further tackle the issue, in June 2017, a multi-agency operation was put in place which included regular, increased patrols down the stretch and organised dates over weekends and evenings where the spot was targeted.

The new PSPO means officers will be able to step up this activity by issuing fixed penalty notices or taking drivers directly to court if they take part in any of the car cruising activities detailed in the order.

Police Sergeant, Carl Holland, said: “We really feel that we’ve been able to make a positive impact through the operation to tackle car cruisers.

“In the six months from June 2017, we issued 82 warnings and seized two vehicles so we’re pleased that we can step up this activity now the Public Spaces Protection Order has been approved.

“Car cruising has been causing problems for people who live in the area and there is a genuine risk that offenders could put lives in danger, including their own.

“The results that we’ve had speak for themselves. We will not tolerate this type of anti-social behaviour in Nottinghamshire.”
