A Sheffield journalist is getting ready to tri his very best - with a series of summer triathlons to raise funds for a city charity.

Graham Smyth has been training hard for the trio of fundraisers which will see him bike 80km, run 20km and swim almost a mile during the course of the three gruelling events.

Graham, who works as Sports Editor at The Worksop Guardian, said: “I started getting fit about three years ago and, though I certainly enjoy staying in shape these days, I’m by no means an athlete, so this will be a real challenge for me, as it would for anybody.”

Graham is hoping to raise at least £600 for Sheffield’s City Hearts anti-trafficking charity. The charity works with victims of human trafficking, offering them rehabilitation and helping them as they begin to restore their lives.

Graham, 32, explained: “I’ve seen the work this charity does and how important it is. It’s stunning to me, to hear some of the stories and try to imagine things like that still happen to people in this day and age. I was keen to do something to help and to raise awareness”

And Graham is well on the way to smashing his target, with £539 of donations already on his JustGiving page. He will kick off his challenge next Saturday at the Blacksheep Brewery Triathlon in Ripon, followed by the Bassetlaw Sprint Triathlon in August and concluding with the Last Minute triathlon in Nottinghamshire in September.

The dad-of-three, from Hackenthorpe, added: “I’m definitely a little nervous as it’s the biggest physical challenge I’ve ever attempted but, whatever happens, I know my family will be waiting on the finishing line to cheer me across.”
