I want to make sure Dawson didn't die for nothing

The two-year-old captured the hearts of a whole community after he was diagnosed with heptoblastoma and eventually lost his battle with the rare cancer.

His mum Wendy Willcock says she is determined to help other children to make sure her precious son is never forgotten.

She said: “Dawson would be turning three on Thursday and in his memory we have organised a big party/fundraiser “Life is a gift, let’s unwrap it.”

“It might seem strange to hold a party, but last year as we planned Dawson’s big birthday party knowing it was his last, I felt awful knowing this year I wouldn’t be able to plan one-so we did. A party for everyone, in memory of a special little boy.”

The party will be held at Blidworth miners Welfare on Sunday September 23 from 2-5pm.

There will be bouncy castles, mascots, popcorn candy floss, face paining, glitter tattoos, Art Venturers, a fire engine, archery, Jungle Jo Animal Experience.

Tickets are £3 per child, under ones with a sibling free or £5 for two children.

The family raised hundreds of thousands for treatment Dawson was never able to have and set up a charity ‘Dawson You Are My Sunshine’ in his name, which is now in the final process of becoming officially registered.

They bought a caravan at Butlins Skegness to give a much needed free holiday for children with life threatening illnesses or diseases and their families.

Wendy said: “On his second birthday 20 of the family went to Skegness to celebrate Dawson’s birthday with him.

“When I look at the photos he looks very poorly.

“It has been amazing - there have been four holidays a week and at the last count 67 families we have catered for.

“There have been so many lovely messages from families who have been there.

“A couple of the youngsters have unfortunately passed away.

“One mum took the time to message me whose daughter passed away. These memories mean everything.

“It has flown by since Dawson died - it has gone so fast. On the other hand it feels like years since I kissed him.

“It helps when people ask how I’m doing.

“I just say I want to make sure he didn’t die for nothing.

“Things need to be better for children with cancer and their families.”
