HUTHWAITE: Pensioner who exposed himself to children spared jail

A Huthwaite pensioner who exposed himself to school children who walked past his flat on their way to the school bus stop has been spared jail.

John Galvin Wells was spotted by two 12-year-old girls standing naked in the doorway of his flat in Swanson Avenue on 20th and 21st May 2013, Mansfield Magistrates’ Court was told today (13th November).

On a third occasion on 22nd May, the 71-year-old was also observed by one of the girl’s 15-year-old brother, who had gone to the address to try and capture Wells on camera.

But the pensioner, who appeared naked once again as the girls walked past, retreated back into his flat as an adult dog walker came along, prosecutor Robert Carr told the court.

“As the girls walked past the flats one of them saw Wells standing in the open doorway. He was naked and she could see his penis. The following day the same thing happened - Wells was standing naked in his doorway.”

Wells denied three charges of exposure but was found guilty by magistrates in August.

All three youngsters were left traumatised by the encounter and had trouble sleeping following the incidents, the court heard.

Defending, Emma Goodall said: “This was clearly a very bizarre situation - this happened three days in a row, but there are no other allegations before or since.

“He was just standing in his doorway when they walked past, although the aggravating factor here is that children were involved.”

Wells was given a 12-month supervision order and told he must report any change in address to police for the next five years.

He was also ordered to pay £360 in costs and charges.
