Huthwaite business owner prosecuted for poor food hygiene

Kumud Roy, owner of the Rani, an Indian Cuisine in Huthwaite, pleaded guilty to 11 offences, which led to him being given a 300 hour community penalty, together with a hygiene prohibition order.

Mr Roy will not be allowed to participating in the management of the Rani or any other food business, until the order is lifted.

Council Officers visited the Rani in June last year for a programmed food hygiene inspection, and found multiple issues that contravened food safety and hygiene regulations.

It was said that officers noticed a strong odour which led them to discover a dead rat and a dead mouse which had both been there for some time.

They also claimed that overalls worn by food handlers had blood and dirt on them, the refrigerator in the middle preparation room was dirty, and food stored in the fridge was in dirty and inadequately sealed containers.

The case was committed to Nottingham Crown Court for sentencing which took place on 26 March 26.

Sentencing, His Honour Judge Godsmark QC said that the premises were “absolutely filthy” and said that Kumud Roy had “presided over the descent of the premises into squalor” and “it was a miracle that there hadn’t been any public health issues”.
