Husband thanks King’s Mill A&E department after wife is admitted following a cancer scare

Rita Shaw, 76 was terrified when she found a lump she feared was cancerous, but doctors put her mind at rest when they told her it was not a tumour.

Rita, of Mansfield Road was taken to the hospital in the early hours of Wednesday by her husband Alan.

Alan, a former chairman of Nottinghamshire County Council, said Rita had been distraught, fearing it was a return of the cancer which caused her to have most of her lung removed two years ago.

He said: “I drove her to King’s Mill Hospital and the doctor saw her in A&E.

“He took her into a room and about ten minutes later informed us that the news was good and the lump was not cancer.

“I want to say thank you for the help and advice King’s Mill Hospital gave to my wife in the early hours of this morning.

“We went to the A&E at 5.30 am and were away at 6.45am.”

Mrs Shaw told Chad: “ I was worried that I might have got secondary cancer, but the doctor told me it was a prolapse brought on coughing.

“I had kept it quiet, but on Tuesday night I just couldn’t take it any more.

“I was seen by a doctor quickly and he was very nice.”

The hospital has been criticised this week for missing its four hour A&E waiting targets.

The quarterly figures show just over 83 per cent of A&E patients were seen against a target of 95 per cent.

Mr Shaw has criticised the hospital in the past after a belated diagnosis of his wife’s cancer.

The hospital apologised to the couple last year after Mr Shaw received a letter offering condolences following his wife’s death - despite the fact that she is alive and kicking.

After having the top part of a lung removed, Rita has now progressed to having check ups every six months.

He said: “I have criticised the hospital in the past but I am going on the record to thank them.

“King’s Mill Hospital is open to point scoring but without it where would we be?”
