Hundreds line the streets for parade

The troops marched through the centre of Eastwood to a service of dedication at the World War One memorial at Mansfield Road memorial garden.

The (Infrastructure Support) Engineer Group, based at Chetwynd Barracks in Chilwell marched in bright sunshine to exercise their right of Freedom of Entry to the Borough.

They parade through one of the borough’s towns each year to honour serving soldiers and veterans.

The soldiers were joined by veterans from the Royal Engineers Association, the Lord Lieutenant Sir John Peace, commander of the group Colonel David Brambell and the Mayor of the Borough Cllr Susan Bagshaw at a short ceremony to dedicate the memorial that was installed last year as part of the WWI commemorations.

The parade was led by the Nottinghamshire Band of the Royal Engineers.

Cllr Bagshaw said: “Our Armed Forces make such outstanding contributions and sacrifices for our country and I am delighted that we can honour them at this parade.

“Broxtowe is unique in Nottinghamshire in having a working barrack in its boundary and Colonel Brambell has made it his duty to build strong relationships with the community over his time here. The troops have marched in all of the town centres and helped to reinforce the link.

“The Colonel is due to move to a new posting this year so I had great pleasure in presenting him with a glass carriage clock to demonstrate our sincere gratitude for his hard work and for being the man behind this important partnership.”
