Nearly 400 people applied for just five jobs at a new pet store that is due to open its doors in Sutton next month.
Britain’s largest pet supplies retailer Pets at Home, says it is investing £420,000 in its new store, which is in the former Shoe Zone unit at The Broad Centre on Station Road.
The opening of the store has created five new jobs in the town - but a whopping 390 people applied for these posts.
Area Manager Paul Doyle said: “There was a strong demand from Sutton pet owners for Pets at Home to come to town, and we’re very pleased to have been able to grant them their wish.
“Pets at Home is committed to recruiting from the local area and I’m pleased we’ve found a team of talented individuals. They’re all extremely passionate about pets and can’t wait to get started.”
The Sutton store will provide products for all the usual domestic animals as well as reptiles, birds and fish. There will also be a Groom Room.
It will open on Friday 6th September.
A spokesman for Ashfield District Council said that a lot of hard work is being done to attract such investment into the Ashfield and Mansfield area, under the banner of ‘Invest Ashfield & Mansfield’.
This includes helping local businesses to grow and stimulating inward investment by helping companies address supply chain, recruitment and planning issues.
“In a bid to stimulate retail investment, the council promotes the presence of larger retail opportunities to potential occupants with the expectation that the larger stores being let will result in any smaller vacant retail units also being taken up,” he added.
