A hundred work placements up for grabs for students in Broxtowe

Mayor of the Borough of Broxtowe, Councillor Susan Bagshaw joins representatives from the Council, United Living and Central College along with construction students who will take part in the work experience programme.

Broxtowe Borough Council, United Living and Central College Nottingham will be offering around three students a week that chance to get experience in trades such as plumbing, joinery, painting, plastering and electrical work.

The students’ efforts will support residential communities included in the council’s housing modernisation contract by working on replacing kitchens and bathrooms, as well as upgrading electrical installations.

Richard Baker, business unit director at United Living, said: “Not only will this practical experience help to prepare our students for the world of work, it also has the benefit of connecting them with our communities to provide a real sense of purpose.”

And Terry Brickles, head of construction at Central College Nottingham, added that this type of work experience can help prepare students for the world of work.

He said: “Partnerships such as this go towards developing the next generation of skilled trades professionals.”

This scheme follows a similar trial-project from this summer, which saw 12 students help on housing refurbishment sites in Broxtowe.

Council leader Richard Jackson, portfolio holder for environment and economic development, said: “The council is incredibly proud of this initiative which will equip young people with the valuable skills they need to enter the world of work.

“This is just one of many projects the council has invested in as part of its commitment to jobs and business growth and we also have a flourishing apprenticeship programme with more apprentices than ever being employed by the council.”
