Hucknall’s Flying Bedstead pub to be demolished for new Co-op

The application by the Co-operative Group for a single storey convenience store at the site of the Flying Bedstead public house was given the green light at a meeting of Ashfield District Council Planning Committee on Wednesday.

The original plans, which were submitted late last year, were withdrawn after objections were raised by residents.

Residents had submitted a 270 name petition objecting to the development along with 15 individual representations.

Objections included an increase in traffic congestion, concerns including the parking of delivery vehicles and manoeuvres and early morning noise from deliveries.

Ken Coatham, chairman of Hucknall Central Tenants and Residents’ Association, said: “Parking is a major problem already along this section of Watnall Road in front of the Flying Bedstead. These plans will only make the situation much worse. The Co-op is planning to extend the pavement and reduce the width of the road further making a lay-by for parking.”

“It is already difficult for pedestrians to cross in this section, We are disappointed the council did not have the authority to impose a Pelican Crossing.”

Objectors wanted the public house retained - The name relates to the first vertical take-off aircraft made at the local Rolls Royce factory.

But the But the pub is not on the council’s list of local heritage assets nor a listed building.

David Pritchard, agent for the applicant said the new store would significantly enhance shopping for the area and create eight full time jobs and 15 part time jobs.

He added: “The conditions of the application will make sure there is no noise from plant and equipment.”
