That’s the view of Shadow Home Secretary Yvette Cooper who has visited Hucknall at the invitation of Leonie Mathers, Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for the Sherwood constituency.

Shortly after arriving in Nottinghamshire, she spoke to the Dispatch.

She said: “The people of Hucknall and Sherwood are being left behind by this Government.

“The Government says that the recovery is under way but the truth is that people are not seeing that.”

She said that she was visiting Hucknall to talk about various issues, such as the NHS and the ‘cost of living crisis’, but, more specifically, about immigration.

She said that the previous Labour Government had made some mistakes when it came to immigration, but added that the current administration had got it wrong.

Top of the Labour Party’s list for tackling immigration, she said, was emphasising that not all immigration is the same, citing illegal immigration versus students.

Border controls needed to be improved, with better checks needed, she added.

She also said that the French government was a crucial partner in these matters.

The senior politician added that more apprenticeships are needed and job opportunities created for people in the Hucknall area.
