Hucknall High Street to be free of traffic

People will be given an early chance to find out what it is like to stroll along a part of Hucknall High Street when it is free of traffic.

The I Love Hucknall group have opted for Thursday 21st August as a ‘taster day’ on the section between Baker Street and Watnall Road.

This stretch of High Street will eventually be permanently pedestrianised by Notts County Council, who are also to build an inner relief road for the town centre.

When the ‘taster’ takes place, the county council are arranging for traffic to be diverted along surrounding roads for a few hours.

Work on the new road is due to start in the spring or early summer of 2015 and the whole scheme is scheduled for completion by December 2016.

I Love Hucknall want the ‘taster’ to take the form of a family fun day, complete with stalls, an ice-cream van, fairground rides and Continental-style tables and chairs outside cafes.

“I think it is a great idea,” said the group’s acting chair, Sandy Singleton.

Tom Boylan, of the county council’s major road projects department, said: “We will be glad to help.”

At a general meeting of I Love Hucknall, members resolved to keep the group’s flag flying, despite the sudden resignation of influential chairman Chris Williams for business reasons.

They will continue to promote a loyalty card scheme, which is aimed at encouraging local retailers to reward regular customers with discounts.

The group are also shortly to launch a website which will display at least 3,000 products on behalf of local businesses, enabling orders to be made online.

A new chairman will be elected at the group’s next meeting at the Sure Start Children’s Centre, Broomhill Road, Hucknall, on Wednesday 11th June, starting at 6pm.
