Beers went flying and fans went crazy as Maguire, who attended St Mary’s Roman Catholic High School and often returns there to give inspirational talks, powered a header into the corner of the Swedish net on the half hour to help the Three Lions secure their first semi-final since 1990.

But for one Sheffield United supporter, the ball hitting the back of the net was met with a mixture of emotions after he pledged to have a tattoo of the former Blade on his chest if he scored. Matt Benton, 26, of Doncaster, tweeted before the game: “If @HarryMaguire93 scores against Sweden, his face is getting tattooed on my chest!! #itscominghome #twitterblades #sufc.” And almost as quick as beer went flying in bars across the country, Matt was bombarded with tweets calling on him to fulfil his promise - which, of course, he did.

On Monday, Matt tagged Maguire in a tweet that showed the tattoo had been done, and it caught the Leicester City defender’s attention. He retweeted the post and wrote: “Cant’ believe what I’m seeing... Great effort.”

Maguire, who watched England as a fan at Euro 2016, told Matt he would sent him a signed shirt from the squad.

Gareth Southgate’s team face Croatia in Moscow on Wednesday (7pm) for a chance to play in Sunday’s final. France and Belgium play on the other side of the draw first, with their game scheduled to take place on Tuesday (7pm).
