He has a strong track record of delivering targets in large complex healthcare organisations, such as Liverpool Women’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust, from which he retired earlier this year.

Sean Lyons, the chairman of the trust, said: “Sherwood Forest Hospitals Foundation Trust is pleased to announce that we have appointed a new interim chief executive officer, Peter Herring.

“The current acting chief executive, Karen Fisher, will step aside to take up the role of programme director for the Quality Improvement Plan (QIP).

“The programme director position will enable Karen to focus on and be responsible for driving forward the essential Quality Improvement Plan throughout the trust, until the end of March 2016, at which time she will leave the trust.

“We are very happy to welcome Peter to the trust, but we would also like to sincerely thank Karen Fisher for her leadership and total commitment during her role as acting chief executive officer, in what has been the most difficult and demanding time in the trust’s history.”

Leadership at the trust has recently been rated as inadequate by the Care Quality Commission, with the chief executive position occupied by at least six different people since 2010.

Karen Fisher took over as acting chief executive in April this year when Paul O’Connor left after nearly two years in the role.

Amanda Sullivan, the chief officer for NHS Mansfield and Ashfield Clinical Commissioning Group, said she was pleased a new appointment has been made.

“The trust provides essential hospital services, so we will continue to work in partnership with the trust and regulators to ensure that the required improvements are put in place,” she said.
