Homes could be built on factory site

Plans to build 85 dwellings on the site of a clothing factory in Huthwaite are being mooted by the company that owns it.

A ‘screening opinion’ has been submitted to Ashfield District Council ahead of a proposed outline planning application for the Quantum Clothing Factory site, on North Street in Huthwaite.

This application would be for 85 dwellings, open space, access and infrastructure, and the screening opinion is needed to see if the council would require an Environmental Impact Assessment to be completed as part of the planning process.

A spokesman for Ashfield District Council said: “A screening opinion has been requested by the developer prior to the submission of an application to inform whether their proposals constitute Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) development.

“Should it be determined the proposal is EIA development, then an Environmental Assessment would be required to accompany any future planning application, which would include submission of details on a variety of issues which can include anything from ecology to contamination.

“A decision on this proposal is pending but the application is required to be determined by 4th July.”

The North Street location is Quantum’s head office which it describes on its website as ‘the hub of our commercial, design and development activities’.

It is also the location of the central warehouse for all its manufactured products.

The clothing company specialises in areas such as design, garment and fabric technology and has one sole customer in the UK - Marks & Spencer.

Chad tried to contact the company about the planning application and the future for the site by telephone and email but had not received a reply by the time we went to press.
