A former soldier has returned to the army cadet detachment he attended 20 years ago to pass on his experience while boosting his own CV.

Lieutenant Billy Mayes, 35, has joined the Sutton detachment of the Army Cadet Force as an adult volunteer.

He spent 10 years in the Royal Engineers but is now balancing his volunteering alongside his new career as a substance misuse worker.

Billy has completed courses in leadership and management in his role as a volunteer - skills that helped him gain a promotion in his day job.

“From a personal perspective there are a lot of career enhancing qualifications available for adult volunteers like me to complete,” he said.

“There is a lot of job satisfaction to be gained from working with Cadets, so to take home the satisfaction that you have been a part of their experience is great.”
