History brought back to life at Newstead Abbey

The air at Newstead Abbey was filled with the smell of gunpowder and the sound of firing muskets over the bank holiday weekend when the Sealed Knot Society re-enacted the English Civil War.

Sealed Knot wowed awe-struck spectators with 17th Century living and battle displays featuring cannon fire and cavalry chargers.

The site also boasted a living history camp open to the public, allowing spectators to interact with soldiers, and discover how families supported the armies.

There were also small military drill displays throughout the day.

Visitors enjoyed refreshments at the cafe and a beer tent all weekend.

Coun Dave Trimble, member for leisure and culture at Nottingham City Council, said: “This was a great day out for all the family and a perfect opportunity to see the glorious Newstead Abbey and gardens.”
