Hikers take on three peaks for rescuers

A group of hiking enthusiasts are taking on their biggest challenge yet in aid of mountain rescuers.

The kind-hearted walkers, of Mansfield and Ashfield Walking Group, plan to summit the three peaks of Snowdon, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis between 20th-23rd June.

Keen hiker John Bamford, said the group of four were relishing the challenge but expected Scotland’s Ben Nevis to provide a few ups and downs.

He added: “I have heard it is very steep but we meet every Thursday for a hike and have been putting in a lot of practice.

“We are very determined and go out into the Peak District climbing mountains to build up our fitness.

“We will be preparing with lots of energy drinks and nigh-energy food to help us along the way.”

The walkers will be raising money for Edale Mountain rescue.

Said John: “We decided on this charity because it is run by volunteers and always in need of funding.”

John and his fellow walkers will be led during their three-day challenge by fully qualified mountain leaders.

Mansfield and Ashfield Walking Group is run by the Adventure Service - a Mansfield Woodhouse-based organisation which provides various outdoor activities for people with learning difficulties.

Said John: “It is such a great group if you want to get out and enjoy the outdoor life. Seeing what is out there is just brilliant.

“It is nice way to meet people too.”
