High hopes as Manchester City snap up football starlet aged just 11

LOTS of 11-year-old boys like a kickabout with their pals, but few do it with such aplomb as Kian Breckin.

Such is his skill and potential that Manchester City have signed him and the family has relocated from Rotherham to Sale in Cheshire.

The family want the youngster to go to school near the club’s academy where he can blend schoolwork with honing his playing skills. But he has a lot to live up to. His father Ian, 40, was a footballer with Rotherham United, Nottingham Forest and Chesterfield among other clubs and his uncle, John Breckin, was a Rotherham United player and later manager.

Kian’s mother Leanne, 39, a former international gymnast, said it was a big move.

But they decided because he has just finished at Wickersley St Alban’s Primary School before he moves to a senior school, it was a good time to move.

“I went to Russia when I was a teenager which was a big move in those days, and Ian obviously had his chance to be a sportsman, so we couldn’t deny Kian such a great opportunity,” she said.

“We have just moved over to Sale and Kian is settling in nicely. He goes to Belgium on tour with City under-12s soon so he is very much looking forward to that.”

Kian, who has a sister, Ava, four, signed for City on his grandfather Joe’s birthday. “He was Kian’s biggest fan but sadly died, so it seemed really significant that he should sign on that date,” said Mrs Breckin.

Mrs Breckin works at a travel agency in the Trafford Centre, near Manchester and Kian’s father now has a job as talent scout with Adidas and also scouts for Derby County.
