He will be the latest in a line of sports stars who have graced the Civic Quarter, which has previously hosted evenings with Sugar Ray Leonard and Frank Bruno. The event, being put on by CQ Events, takes place on February 9, with more information available by calling 01623 620257.

Hatton said: “I’m really looking forward to coming to Mansfield and sharing my story with people. It’s going to be a really great night and something different. I’ve been to the highest you can go in my sport, and I’ve been to some low points. You learn from everything and it’s that that I’ll be sharing with people.”

Hatton won his first national amateur title in 1992 at the age of 13. He turned pro in 1997, and in 2002 won the British light-welterweight crown. In June 2005, and after gaining experience as the WBU champion, he beat long-time IBF king Kostya Tsyzu. He ended 2005 by winning another world title with a knockout of WBA champion Carlos Maussa.

In May the following year, he fulfilled his dream of becoming a two-weight world champion by outpointing Luis Collazo in Boston, Massachusetts.
