Hempshill pupils go experimental

Sixteen pupils from Hempshill Hall Primary representing Years 3, 4, 5,and 6 attended a masterclass in the subject, courtesy of Source BioScience one of the leading exponents in the country.

Youngsters were accompanied by teachers Jamie Sewell and Luke Tantum, to the International Diagnostic and Life Sciences business based in Strelley.

Members of the Source BioScience team, including Janet Acocks and bio medical scientists Danielle Wain, Gemma Beighton, Dao Nguyen and Leanne Hinks, contributed to the success of the pupils’ visit.

During the two hour session the visitors, who were split into two groups, were invited to carry out experiments using state of the art equipment.

Extracting DNA samples from strawberries was a task given to the pupils as well as studying tissues and cells through the eyes of a Leica microscope.

The excited pupils, Robert Osborne, Jake Tobin, Jamie Lee Brookes, Abbie Wilcox, Leah Widzierniko, Ryder Castillo, Ellis Ricci, Lauren Osborne, Megan Naylor, Mason Chapman, Tyrece Robinson, Tom Skellett, Summer Clarke, Paige Vernon Banks, Angel Sharrard and Emerson Corden, agreed as one that ‘It has been a great experience!’

Hempshill’s headteacher Helen Ridge expressed her gratitude to Source BioScience for giving her pupils a chance to further their interest in a subject that is ‘vital to the needs of people all over the world’.
