A tattoo studio, run by a businesswoman in Mansfield, has become the first in the area to achieve the top rating of five stars in a new registration programme.

Trinity Ink, which is based at Helen Molloy’s home on Eakring Road, is blazing a trail in the Nottinghamshire Hygiene Accreditation Scheme.

All businesses that use needles and blades are being urged to sign up to the scheme, which is being co-ordinated by local councils in a bid to improve safety standards.

Helen said: “The star rating enables customers to make an informed decision. I think it is important to set a high standard when it comes to cleanliness, hygiene and safety. No customer should have health concerns when getting a tattoo.”

The voluntary scheme, which also applies to businesses such as body piercing and beauty treatment, operates in a similar way to the national food-hygiene rating for restaurants.

Once businesses have applied, councils carry out an inspection, lasting about an hour, and then hand out their accreditation.

Coun Bill Drewett, of the council, said: “Well done to Helen for achieving five stars. We hope other salons and parlours join the scheme because public safety is something we take seriously in Mansfield.”
