Heavy rain and potential floods as Storm Abigail hits the region

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for the East Midlands for Saturday and Sunday by the Met Office.

The weather experts said: “Rain is expected to become heavy and persistent, especially over hills exposed to the strong west to southwesterly flow.

“Be aware that, given already saturated conditions, flooding is possible either from standing water or from rivers which have remained high after the large rainfall totals over the last few days.”

Today it will be breezy and rather cloudy to start but mainly dry. Cloud thickening with outbreaks of heavy rain developing which will turn increasingly persistent over the Derbyshire Hills. Feeling quite cold but turning milder later. Strong winds developing during the evening. Maximum Temperature 14°C.

Tonight windy with heavy rain persisting over the Derbyshire Hills with an increasing risk of flooding as rainfall totals build up. Drier spells developing elsewhere. Mild. Minimum Temperature 11°C.

On Sunday it will be cloudy and windy with heavy rain persisting over the Derbyshire Hills with a continued risk of flooding. Drier and feeling mild elsewhere but still with some rain at times. Maximum Temperature 14°C.
