King’s Mill Hospital introduce new texting service for appointments

KING’S Mill Hospital’s trust has introduced a new texting service to allow patients to cancel or reschedule appointments.

Previously, patients with a mobile number registered on the hospital system would receive a text message reminding them of their appointment.

Now, with the new two-way texting service, they can text this information back to cancel or rearrange.

The aim of the service is to reduce the number of patients failing to turn up to appointments by up to 20 per cent.

Almost 300,000 outpatients are seen at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust’s hospitals. Last year, patients failing to turn up to appointments without informing staff in advance cost the trust around £3m. The new service will enable cancelled appointment slots to be offered to other patients, thus saving money.

For the service to be as effective as possible, more mobile phone numbers are needed. Ann Clay, manager of King’s Treatment Centre, said: “Next time you are at an appointment, please let reception staff know your number.”K
