The Met Office pollen forecast will be particularly bad news for hay fever sufferers.

Very high levels of grass pollen and weed pollen are not unusual for this time of year.

Grass pollen levels peak between May and July and weed pollen levels hit their peak between June and September.

Tree pollen levels are at their highest earlier in the year - between March and May.

Some 95 per cent of hay fever sufferers are allergic to grass pollen.

Hay fever can be made worse by alcohol because beer wine and other spirits contain histamine - the chemical that sets off allergy symptoms in the body.
