GUILTY: Care home boss admits failings after dementia resident dies from fall

The manager of Rose Court Lodge Care Home in Sutton Road, Mansfield, Amanda Dean, and her employer, Embrace All Ltd, have admitted serious health and safety breaches after 76-year-old dementia patient George Chicken died when he fell down an unlit staircase.

Dean, 50, of Devonshire Street, Ambergate, in Derbyshire changed her plea to guilty this morning at Nottingham Crown Court this morning, to the charge of failing to ensure safety of non-employees.

Two other charges were dropped.

Embrace All Ltd, which owns the home, had denied 'failing to make a suitable and sufficient risk assessment of the health and safety risks, failing to ensure the safety of non-employees and to provide a safe workplace'.

The allegations were brought against Dean and the company after George Chicken died in November 2012, after he walked through a fire door and fell down a stairway outside the building.

Sentencing has been adjourned until September 8.

Mansfield District Council released a statement on the case, saying: "Today at Nottingham Crown Court, in a case prosecuted by Mansfield District Council, Embrace All Ltd (formerly European Care (GB) Ltd) admitted its guilt of failing to ensure the safety of residents at Rose Court Lodge care home in Mansfield. "The home manager Amanda Dean, of Ambergate, Derbyshire, also admitted failing to take reasonable care for residents. "The case arose as a result of an investigation following a fall which occurred on 4 November 2012 at Rose Court Lodge. "George Chicken, a 76-year-old resident with dementia, died from injuries he sustained after he fell down fire escape stairs at the home in Sutton Road. "Sentence is planned for 8 September 2016 and until the case, is concluded, the council has no further comment."
