Among the attractions planned are a Peppa Pig meet and greet and snow machines.

One of the mums behind the project, Naiomi-Rebecca Mathis, of Skegby said: “We have a community of more than 15,000 in these villages and feel it is important for our community to have a Christmas lights switch on event, like others around the country.”

Ashfield Activities Association put on the Ashfield Gala this summer and the organisers are hoping to put their experience to good use over the festive season.

Naiomi said: “This will be the first year Ashfield Activities Association have held this event.

“We are a group of local mothers and having children we wanted to start something for them and future generations.

“We have eight volunteers and other mums have come forward and said if there is anything we need on the day they will help us out.

“We want to make it grow in popularity and think it will excite people of all ages for surrounding villages too.

“There has been an event at the community centre at Skegby but nothing has happened around the main tree on the High Street.

The council has bought new lights and Quarrydale School has made a donation for trees on shops.

“This will breath life into the whole thing.”

The group is seeking permission to close off the whole High Street for the event, with many local businesses staying open late.

Naiomi added: “We do hope local businesses and the community will get on board and help us to raise funds.”
