Green-fingered youngsters plant an orchard

Two classes from Berry Hill Primary School visited King George V Park to plant their own fruit trees with the hope the trees will quickly become established.

The youngsters are looking forward returning to the park in the future to check on the tree’s progress.

The funding for half the trees was secured from the Greenwood Partnership Trust and the remainder were supplied by Mansfield District Council.

Officers from both funding organisations were at the planting event to offer advice and support about planting trees.

The school has taken part in many joint projects, to help with park improvements. They have sowed a wildflower meadow, supported the In Bloom, Clean Up Mansfield and Green Flag initiatives, designed a tree carving and planted other trees as well as planting spring flowering bulbs.

The children were able to see crocuses in flower, which were planted during a previous visit.

Teacher Kerry Senior said: “We are always keen to take up opportunities to visit the park. We wish to encourage children to see the importance of their actions in the local area.”
