Green-fingered church group’s gardening gong

A group of green-fingered churchgoers are celebrating after receiving a top award for a community garden.

The Green and Wild group at St Mark’s Church Mansfield have been together for less than two years and have already picked up three awards - including an ‘outstanding’ from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) last month.

The group was praised for the development of their borders, bug hotels, and a healthy budget from the sale of produce.

The group, who garden at the Nottingham Road church, were awarded top marks in the society’s ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ awards.

Organiser Isobel Bounford said: “We couldn’t believe it when we were awarded an ‘outstanding’.

“The recognition of our efforts by the RHS assessors and the opportunity to hear about other inspiring community gardening projects has given us a huge boost.

“I’d like to congratulate everyone who has contributed in any way to St Mark’s Community Garden and we’re looking forward to another year of growth.”

Jeff Bates, RHS assessor said in his report: “The transformation has been remarkable.”
