Great war soldier remembered

Mansfield man Lewis Kerry (78), of Pentland Court, has shared this photo of his late grandfather’s medals on the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War.

Frank Kerry, of Mansfield Woodhouse, went off to fight in 1915 as a volunteer and was awarded the Victory Medal, the British Medal and the Star Medal.

Mr Kerry survived the war and returned to open a shoe repair shop in Tuxford. He died in 1945.

Said Lewis: “I cannot remember a lot about him but I can remember visiting the shop when I was a lad.

“The shop is no longer there but his old cottage is Egmanton still stands.”
