PEOPLE in Ashfield can get involved in a host of events to mark the London 2012 Paralympic Games, which open on Wednesday.

As part of the celebrations, Ashfield District Council has organised an ‘Opening Ceremony’ on Wednesday at the adiZone outdoor gym area next to Hucknall Leisure Centre.

The event, which takes place between 11am and 4pm, will include various free activities for folk to try such as a climbing wall, mini squash, dance and boccia.

Meanwhile, an event at Kirkby’s Kingsway Park has been planned to welcome home Sutton’s Paralympic swimmers Sam and Ollie Hynd.

The brothers, who have been nicknamed ‘Team Hynd’, will be returning to their home district on 14th September.

At the event, people will be able to have a go at a number of sports tasters as well as find out about joining sports clubs in the area.

Last week, deputy council leader John Wilmott said: “There are so many fantastic opportunities for the people of Ashfield to take part in this year and it is hoped that people are feeling inspired and ready to get active after the Olympic Games and with the upcoming Paralympic Games.”
