Get involved as a volunteer for #mad4ashfield

Two Sutton residents have pledged to keep their area clean and tidy by signing up as environmental volunteers for Ashfield District Council.

Melanie Jackson and Christine Spencer regularly litter pick, sweep and clear weeds from the pavements on Percy Street, Sutton.

They have now been provided with equipment from the council to help them carry out and continue with their community minded efforts.

Melanie, who suffers from fibromyalgia and gets involved when her condition allows, said: “Being an environmental volunteer helps to keep me moving, motivated and in regular contact with my neighbours.”

Christine added: “Volunteering has helped to build community spirit that is often missing nowadays and I enjoy keeping in regular contact with everyone on the street.”

The council are now looking for more people to pledge time to the cause.

A spokesman said: “If you are inspired by this story and want to tidy up your street then why not get up, get involved and get #mad4ashfield by becoming a volunteer yourself?”
