Garden waste charge to be introduced in Ashfield

Garden waste recycling has been free for two years after the council rolled out new 180-litre bins.

During this time, more than 30,000 households have made regular use of the service and in 2017 almost 10,000 tonnes of garden waste was composted.

The new charge will be £28 per year making it the cheapest in the county when paid by Direct Debit.

The annual charge will be £34 for non-Direct Debit customers. Additional bins will also be available at half the price of the first bin and the council said the price will be frozen until 2020.

The controversial decision was orginally opposed by some councillors at Ashfield District Council but has now been given the green light.

Councillor Jason Zadrozny challenged the decision, by requesting a “call-in”, a way to ask for the decision to be scrutinised.

Coun Zadrozny, of the opposition Ashfield Independents group, said introducing the fees will have a “huge impact” on recycling.

Ashfield District Council said it will be running a number of campaigns on the run up to the new season in March 2018, encouraging residents to re-subscribe to the garden waste recycling service in order to continue receiving the benefits of the service.

A series of promotional park events will take place from 10am – 2pm on:

August 8 – Kingsway Park, Kirkby in Ashfield

August 9 – Titchfield Park, Hucknall (As part of Sure Start event)

August 10 – Sutton Lawn, Sutton in Ashfield

At each event there will be activities and information about recycling and the environment, giveaways and activities for the children.
