A whole community rallied round after Ray, 57 was diagnosed with terminal cancer last summer and given just months to live.

Tributes have been paid to Ray this week from friends old and new.

In an email Steve Turner said: “I played with Ray in the mid-80’s in a band called Bocage (I don’t know who thought of the name, it’s a French hedgerow or something but it just sounded 80’s).

I played bass, we had a great female singer named Angie and her husband played guitar and Ray (here’s a surprise) played keyboards.

“He was an excellent keyboard player. He always had stuff worked out and it was usually Ray who helped the rest of us work stuff out. He was a born musician. He had the trademark black beret even then! “We used to practice in a downstairs room at Sutton Centre School.

“I remember him as always smiling, humorous and gentle. He would chide you jokingly with that ever-present grin and more often than not had the whole band in stitches.

“He was only with us for about a year and moved on to other things as was his wont.

“Whenever I had a trip to Mansfield I always remember feeling disappointed if I didn’t see him out and about with his guitar. Hopefully whenever I visit now I will have nothing but really warm memories about probably the most genuine man I’ve ever known.”

A justgiving page has been set up to help pay for Ray’s funeral.
