Fundraising day for children of Chernobyl

Kim, of Thoresby Dale, is the driving force behind the Hucknall Friends of Chernobyl Children - a charity which has flourished since its formation 15-years-ago, and whose main aim is to bring sunshine into the lives of disadvantaged young people from Belarus.

In June 2014, the Hucknall Friends, a committed group of host families and supporters, will be extending the hands of friendship to a new group of children who will be setting foot on English soil for the first time.

The cost of this initiative is £14,000 and Kim and her team have kick-started their fundraising efforts with a Race Night at the Royal British Legion which brought in £1,000 and then a Strawberry and Champagne evening at Kim’s home which realised a further £600.

The Chernobyl fundraisers most recent effort for the cause took place at Seymour Road Baptist Church and was appropriately named “The Pudding Club” which brought a sweet taste of success and a rewarding return of £550.

The Pudding Club centred around a pudding tasting competition whereby members of the public paid for the privilege of sampling more than 28 kinds of different sweets, all donated by local people, and giving marks for each one tasted.

The most popular choice was a Butterscotch Tart made by Michelle Hazelwood which earned her a prize. Just for good measure Kim and her team manned a variety of stalls which further boosted the group’s efforts.

Delighted by the success of the Pudding Club event, Kim extended a warm thank-you to more than 100 people who offered their support.

“We have a number of fundraising events planned for the future and I would like to reach out to the people of Hucknall, calling for their support,” said Kim.
