Fuel bills to fall thanks to scheme

Energy bills are set to fall for hundreds of Ashfield residents after a Government subsidy helped fund essential work to makes their homes warmer.

More than 240 properties have benefitted from extra insulation thanks to a Green Deal community scheme led by Ashfield District Council and funded to the tune of £1.1 million by the Department of Energy and Climate Change.

The council’s Affordable Warmth team has worked with the Starfish Group on the project, enabling a total of over £1.6m to be spent improving properties within the district.

As well as fitting external wall insulation, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation, the team has also provided energy advice to residents, encouraging them to change their behaviour and swap fuel suppliers to further reduce their energy bills.

Council leader, Councillor Cheryl Butler, said the scheme had been a great way of tackling fuel poverty in the district.

“Ashfield has once more led the way and delivered a brilliant scheme which improves the quality of life for residents,” she said.

“The district was one of the first to receive the DECC funding and is now leading the way in delivering a scheme which is supporting people and improving their homes.

“Being able to enjoy a properly heated home and reduced fuel bills really makes a difference to the overall well being of a household.”

Work has been taking place over the last year and residents have already said that their homes feel noticeably warmer after the work and bills have been cut.

Martin Gerrelli, of the Starfish Group, said they were delighted to have been involved.

“We’re aiming to complete the programme by March 2016 and are confident that the health and wellbeing of Ashfield’s communities will be better as a result,” he added.
