Friday 30th May: Sutton community news

URC - The Rev Melvin Ellis conducted Sunday week’s service. Mrs Crystal Gibson was vestry steward and reader and Mrs Rita Parsons was door steward. Mrs Gill Brunt arranged flowers in memory of Mrs Wendy Hollam. Mr Bill Gibson took the offertory. Tracey Cranfield led 1st (Sutton) Brownies’ meeting. David Parnell and Mally Wainwright were instructors at Ashfield Dragons Kick Boxing sessions.

St John’s Church- On Thursday week there was a WeightWatchers’ meeting. Olive Branch Coffee Bar was open on Friday week and Saturday week. There was a Boys’ Brigade meeting on the Friday. Mr Arnie Kells led Sunday week’s morning worship and Mrs Sue Otter operated the clavinova. Readers were steward Mrs Ann Cope and Mrs Margaret Cosford. Junior church was led by Vicky Young and Janine Burton. Refreshments were served by Mr and Mrs P. Otter. Other steward was Jill Moakes. Mrs Sue Stamenkovic led evening worship and Mrs Doreen Young played the clavinova. Readers were Mr Alan Adkin and steward Lesley Moakes. Other steward was Mr Peter Stamenkovic. Yesterday week there were meetings of Scrabble group and a zumba class. Last Wednesday there was prayer and meditation followed by a ramble, and art and keep fit classes. Mr John Whitehead led a prayer and praise meeting. Speaker was the Rev Philip McDonald, Superintendent of Newark and Southwell Circuit. Soloist was Yvonne Hague and accompanist was Mrs Jan Dawes.

Salvation Army - On Thursday week Jenni Ross led Bible study. Lt Matthew Brown led Sunday week’s meetings.

Community of Christ - At last Tuesday week’s Peacemakers Youth Group meeting Barbara Woodhouse, Helen Kemp and Marianne Rowe arranged games. Celia Roddis led worship at the women’s meeting before a beetle drive. Hazel Holmes provided refreshments.  There was a coffee morning and nearly new sale on Wednesday week and a youth meeting in the evening. Come, Holy Spirit, Come, was the theme for Sunday week’s worship, led by Vivian Betts. Members gave readings and Hazel Holmes welcomed the congregation and took the offering. Ralph Holmes was pianist and Wayne and Linda Rowe provided refreshments afterwards.

Sutton Seniors - Members of 50 Plus Forum had a ‘meeting on a bus’ organised by Christine Roebuck. They had fish and chip lunch at Ollerton before a trip to a craft centre at Edwinstowe. Pearl Holloway and Christine Roebuck organised a raffle won by Janice Norton, Christine Roebuck, Glenice Coleman, Stan Holloway, Kath Andrews, Barbara Redshaw and Mrs Else.

4th Rainbows - At Wednesday week’s meeting members used plastic milk bottles to make model elephants.

5TH Brownies - Members worked on a Russian-theme challenge and gardener badge at Wednesday week’s meeting.

Zion Baptist Church - Sunday week’s worship was led by Helen Tomlinson and the worship team. Brian Tomlinson was in charge of sound and lighting mixing systems. Fiona Selby spoke about prayer and the Rev Charles Claydon was speaker. Xtreme Sunday School was led by Fiona Selby and Helen and Matt Tomlinson. Refreshments were served afterwards.

Brierley House - Bingo callers were Mrs V. Morrison and Mr A. Morrison. Game winners were Mesdames P. Lovatt, D. Goddard, J. Connah, J. Swain, P. Dykes, J. Mansfield, J. Wood, M. Brain and B. Rudhall and Messrs D. Johnson, M. Wood, E. Lovatt and Morrison. Raffle winners were Mrs Brain, Mrs C. Stevenson and Messrs Morrison, D. Franks and Wood. Members had an outing to Hilcote Country Club and a ride in the countryside last Tuesday week.

New Cross Church.

The Rev Mary Foden-Currie celebrated Holy Communion on Wednesday week. Hilary Bostock led Pins and Needles Group’s meeting and Thursday week’s card craft session. There was an Alpha Course meeting on the Wednesday. June Bagley led Friday week’s MINGLE Group meeting and Jane Selby led a children’s glee dance club meeting. The Rev Graham Holloway celebrated Sunday week’s Holy Communion and youth team members arranged 11 Alive service. Greeters were Adrian and Jayne Self. Steward Bernard Brown gave readings, with the Rev Frank Crowther, and took the offertory, with Derek Smith. Joyce Handford and Derek Smith served refreshments. Yesterday week there was a community choir practice.
