Police believe Mr Hallam may have been travelling from Stamford with a Peterborough taxi firm and had just been dropped off when he was hit.

Coroner David Heming opened an inquest into his death earlier this month and gave the cause as multiple injuries to the chest, abdomen, pelvis and limbs.

PC Wayne Softley, from the Cambridgshire Constabulary collision investigation unit, said: “I would like to speak to anyone who knows how Andrew got from Stamford to Wittering, particularly any taxi driver who may have dropped him off.”

Anyone with information should call PC Softley on 01480 456111.

A former Quarrydale School pupil, SAC Hallam of the 3 Squadron RAF Regiment had been selected for an elite sniper training course and was very well regarded by his regiment.
