Fresh plans to convert old factory into homes

The old building between Mansfield’s Milton Street and Burns Street could be turned into eight apartments and 13 flats if planning permission is granted.

Last used by photography business, School Pictures International Ltd, the building has fallen in serious disrepair in recent years, with the applicant insistent that the building will be used for employment purposes again having attracted little interest.

In a statement from the applicant, Mansfield’s Tirth Ram, it reads: “The building has long been disused and has been subject to vandalism and fire.

“It has been rendered unfit for economic purpose and conversion for use as residential will lend the building to meet the local housing shortfall.

“While the loss of use of the building may be regrettable, there is clearly a lack of demand for the facility and it’s considered to be of greater importance to bring the building back into beneficial use.”

It could see five one-bedroom dwellings being created, and 16 two bedroom.

Planning permission to convert the old building was granted in 2014 to convert the front of the existing building facing Milton Street into five dwellings, with another seven to the rear of the building facing on to Burns Street.

It was narrowly passed by Mansfield District Council’s planning committee after many members raised concerns over parking, despite it being considered satisfactory by the Highways Agency.

The latest plans includes 21 car-park spaces within the site.

The plans are likely to go before the Mansfield District Council planning committee in the coming months.
