Free cinema prepares for launch day

After two years of fundraising and grant applications, the day has finally arrived to launch the West Hucknall Community Cinema Club.

Thanks to volunteers, funding from The National Lottery, The Coalfield Regeneration Trust, the Diocese, Hucknall Beauvale Community and Youth Charity and Ashfield District councillors, free films are now on offer in the town.

The idea to set up a community cinema began with Revd Jo Stephens of St Peter and St Paul’s Church.

“I had the vision two years ago but it was the volunteers who helped make it a reality,” said Revd Stephens. “It has been a long process as we had to upgrade the community hall and refurbish it in two stages and then fundraise further to buy the equipment.”

The 15ft screen and surround sound will give the full cinematic experience for guests and offers the latest HD digital equipment.

“We wanted to get the top quality equipment and the members had a screen test last week and it was brilliant.”

The system and facilities have made the venue accessible to all including wheelchair access and use of the loop system for the hard of hearing.

It is hoped the FREE monthly screenings will become a big community event for all the family.

The opening night launch takes place on 13th June at the Ruffs Drive community hall for special guests only but the first public screening takes place on Saturday 12th July at 2pm.
