FREE bananas give boost to Fairtrade Fortnight

CATERERS at the Lindhurst Rooms at Mansfield Civic Centre are set to support Fairtrade Fortnight – by giving away thousands of bananas.

Fairtrade Fortnight – which runs from 25th Feb to 10th March – is this year asking the British public to focus on where their food comes from and to help support smallholders in the developing world.

And to show support for the campaign, Sodexo Prestige – which runs all the catering and conferencing at the Lindhurst Rooms at Mansfield Civic Centre – will give a Fairtrade banana to every delegate attending a meeting or conference over the next two weeks.

The giveaway is part of campaign being run by Sodexo Prestige nationally, which will see 10,000 pieces of fruit handed out at venues across the UK.

Sodexo has outlined its long term sustainability goals in its A Better Tomorrow plan which outlines its plans for the company up to 2020.

The organisation is already committed to using a range of Fairtrade products including sugar, coffee and tea and this Fairtrade Fortnight initiative shows its continued support of the developing world.

“By giving out Fairtrade bananas we’re not only showing our support of this important organisation but we are also giving out delegates a healthy snack,” said Darrell Farnsworth, General Manager at the Lindhurst Rooms at Mansfield Civic Centre.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to focus on the really vital work that The Fairtrade Foundation is doing.”

Sodexo’s support has been praised by James Bennett, Head of Brand and Out of Home at the Fairtrade Foundation.

“In 2013 Fairtrade is challenging business to go further for Fairtrade producers. We are pleased to work with Sodexo Prestige on a number of initiatives that drive sales of Fairtrade goods across their sites and raise awareness to their consumers.”
