A former South Normanton man has appeared before magistrates to face charges of failing to declare employment whilst claiming Jobseekers Allowance, housing benefit and council tax benefit.

Martin Pettifer (49), formerly of Alfred Street, pleaded guilty to claiming over £3,300 in benefits between December 2011 and May 2012 to which he knew he was not entitled.

Appearing at North East Derbyshire and Dales Magistrates Court in Chesterfield, he was given a conditional discharge, ordered to pay costs of £100 and also repay the amounts he wrongly claimed.

The conviction followed another joint investigation by Bolsover District Council and The Department for Work and Pensions.

Bolsover District Council’s cabinet member for customer services, Coun Rose Bowler said: “This is the third such case in as many weeks and shows we are committed to catching people who commit benefit fraud and bringing them before the courts.”

If you know of anyone who you suspect is committing benefit fraud, then they are being urged to call contact
