Four Sutton pubs fail alcohol sting

FOUR out of five pubs in Sutton have failed a test purchase operation carried out in the town.

An underage volunteer visited the pubs on Friday night and was served alcohol in New Cross in Outram Street, The Picture House in Fox Street, The Devonshire Arms in High Pavement, and The White Swan in Devonshire Square.

The only pub to refuse to serve the volunteer was the Market Tavern in Market Place.

Staff members who served the volunteer were issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice, while the licensees of the premises were warned about their age checking procedures.

Insp Andy Clarke, who is in charge of Neighbourhood Policing in Sutton, said: “I’m extremely disappointed with these results, as our Licensing Officers have been working closely with the pubs and bars in Sutton.

“This is part of an ongoing initiative to ensure we work in partnership with them to create a safe environment for patrons to visit and remind those working in the licensing trade of their licensing obligations.

“The licensees have been spoken to and warned that we will be continuing to conduct regular test purchase operations in the area.

“I expect to see a significant improvement in results, otherwise we will be forced to look at taking stronger action against those premises that continue to serve underage drinkers.”
