‘Fountaindale Five’ aim high for school

A team of fundraisers are gearing up for their latest challenge to raise cash for a Mansfield school for youngsters with special educational needs.

Members of Team Fountaindale are currently in training to tackle the gruelling Three Peaks Challenge to help raise funds for the Fountaindale School, in Nottingham Road.

It will be the third of five planned challenges for the Fountaindale Five team, after they managed to swim the equivalent distance of the English Channel last month.

Team members Shaun Taylor, James Bennett, Sarah Hornsby, Nik Teale, Shaun Massey, Roy Turton, Nickie Blower and Keeley Gascoigne are currently hill-walking in Derbyshire, with some even travelling to Snowdonia to get set for the ordeal.

In June, the team took to the water in a special swimathon at the Rebecca Adlington Swimming Centre, completing the 1,440 lengths in under five hours.

Shaun Taylor, whose eight-year-old son George attends Fountaindale, said: “The swimathon was really intense swimming but because we were doing it as a team we were able to go in the pool and really blast it for half an hour at a time.

“For the last half hour we all swam together to complete it in under five hours - we were really impressed with our performance.

“My son, George, is over the moon about what we’re doing and we’re obviously keeping the school involved as well.”

The team plan to complete the Three Peaks Challenge on 1st August, and will aim to climb to the summits of Mount Snowdon, Ben Nevis and Scarfell Pyke in 24-hours

Future events are set to include the Mansfield 10K race and the Isle of Wight challenge, with all five challenges completed by September.
