Former Nottingham Forest striker Marlon King jailed for dangerous driving

Former Nottingham Forest footballer Marlon King has been jailed for dangerous driving.

King, of Torksey in Lincolnshire, was travelling along the A46 just before 3pm on Friday 26th April when he caused a three-car collision.

The former Sheffield United striker, who was driving a white Porsche Panamera, undertook a Volkswagen Polo at speed as they left a roundabout, near Winthorpe.

He then cut in front of the 35-year-old driver and slammed on his brakes.

The Polo careered into the rear of the Porsche and as a result a Vauxhall Astra ran into the back of the Polo.

The 35-year-old Polo driver was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre with a broken arm, cuts and bruises, concussion and whiplash injuries.

The 48-year-old Astra driver was also taken to hospital. He sustained cuts and bruises to his head and face, bruised ribs and lasting injuries to his wrists.

King, who played for Nottingham Forest between 2003 and 2005, pleaded guilty to the offence at a hearing in March.

He was sentenced at Nottingham Crown Court yesterday (Thursday 15th May 2104) to 18 months in prison and was banned from driving for three years.

The driver of the Polo, who does not wish to be identified, said: “I have driven on the roads for a lot of my career and have seen the full spectrum of motorists’ attitudes. I have been jaded by this incident and it’s prompted a change of career for me.

“I am getting on with my life. My body is back together again, but I will be physically affected by what happened that day for the rest of my life.”

PC Richard Pocock, who dealt with the case, said: “It is beyond me why some people continue to think they can use the road networks as a race track, without any consideration for their own or other people’s safety.

“In King’s case, there appears to have been absolutely no reason for his aggressive and dangerous actions that day, other than that he had a high-performance car and he thought that made him king of the road.

“Today’s outcome shows that it doesn’t matter who you are, if you drive in a dangerous manner on Nottinghamshire’s roads, we will work hard to ensure you face the consequences in court.”
