A FORMER Bilsthorpe miner who failed to declare his pension when claiming benefit has been given a suspended prison sentence.

Brian Turner (59), of Crompton Road, dishonestly claimed more than £14,000 in housing and Council Tax benefit.

He was sentenced to eight weeks in custody, suspended for 12 months, at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on 13th June.

Turner had signed various documents stating that the information given was correct, but on each occasion had failed to declare income from his pension.

Although he was previously of good character andhad no history of debt, Turner was unable to explain why he had done it.

Newark & Sherwood District Council pursued the prosecution, and the authority’s Director for Resources, David Dickinson, said: “ The benefits system exists to help people who are not in a position to support themselves financially.”

The offences were committed between 11th June 2004 and 7th September 2011.

Turner must repay the £14,074 he dishonestly claimed and £100 costs.
