When he’s not helping clients with their civil litigation and employment issues, Andrew Bevan of Jones & Co Solicitors in Ollerton can be seen and heard playing flugelhorn for Thoresby Colliery Band.

And with rehearsals underway for the band’s annual Family Carol Concert at the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham on the 20th and 22nd December his hobby looks set to become a full blown occupation over the Christmas holidays.

Now in his 15th year with the 30-strong band, Andrew has played with Thoresby in numerous concerts and competitions, including the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall in 2011 and the Remembrance Service for the victims of 9/11.

The band, ranked as the best in Nottinghamshire, are also one of the top 50 brass bands worldwide.

Andrew said: “People don’t often realise but brass bands are fiercely competitive and the contests give us our drive to be the best not just in the region but the UK.

“In recent years we’ve come third, fourth and fifth in the national championships so we want to make next year the one we qualify for the finals at the Royal Albert Hall.

“We’re all hoping this Christmas gets us off to the best possible start.”

The band competes throughout the year, with the East Midlands qualifier for the National Brass Band Championships taking place in March.
