Florence celebrates 100th birthday

A Mansfield woman has recalled some of her fond est memories of her gran celebrated a three figure birthday.

According to Dorothy Fhipley, her 100-year-old gran, Florence Fell is yet to be beaten on the best Sunday roast she has ever tasted.

Florence, born Florence North, celebrated her big day on Friday (8th November) surrounded by friends and family.

Dorothy said: “Me and my cousin would often spend time around my grans, it was like a second home.

“Although she never worked, she worked so hard to raise her family and everything she did was pristine.

“She was a fantastic cook and when my mum went to work she would drop us off at my grans.

“She cooked us the most fantastic meals and Sunday roasts.

“To this day I have not tasted one as good.

“She really was a fantastic gran and was the loveliest person.”

Florence married her husband George Henry Green before moving to Westwood where they spent most of their married lives.

The couple then moved to Desmond Court in Underwood in the 1950s when the building was first built.

Florence has not moved since.

On Friday she hosted an open house with friends and family at the Ashfield Homes owned residential home.

She was presented with a bouquet of flowers from care home staff, Sharon Gregory and Jenny Harold.

Sharon, care coordinator , said: “We had an open house for everyone to celebrate Florence’s birthday.

“Her grandaughters came and did all the catering and the following day she was surprised when the family took her out for a meal.”

Florence also received a telegraph and card from the Queen.
