First World War medals stolen in Walesby day before Remembrance Sunday

Medals from the First World War were stolen during a burglary at a house in Walesby just a day before Remembrance Sunday.

Two men entered the house in New Hill at around 3.45pm on Saturday (9th November) via an unlocked back door.

While one spoke to the elderly woman living at the house the other searched the upstairs and stole the medals, which were in an old cigar box.

The two left when the woman’s husband returned to the house from the garden.

They told the man that they were looking for a box of matches.

The first offender is described as having tanned skin, possibly of Asian appearance, with dark, short hair. He was 5ft 6ins to 5ft 8ins tall and clean shaven with a stocky build.

The second man was white with fair hair, he was slightly taller than his accomplice.

Detective Sergeant Gary Hewson said: “This is a despicable crime, which has taken place the day before Remembrance Sunday.

“If you know anything that could help us catch these offenders and return these war medals to this couple then please get in touch.

“Were you in the area at the time? Did you see these men? Or have you been offered these medals?

“I would also like to ask everyone to be vigilant and keep their doors and windows locked, even when you are in the house.”
